7 Things To Expect If You’re Attending Full Figured Fashion Week For The First Time.

Alright curvy cuties, we officially have 105 days (3 months and 15 days) until we invade the “Big Apple” for FFFWeek® 2016. Yep, I am counting the days (as I do every year) because your girl is super excited and if you plan to attend, you should be too. Not only is it a great getaway, it is an opportunity to network and meet new women from all walks of life.

Every year around this time, the hype surrounding Full Figured Fashion Week® begins to build. With the casting tour in full swing and “The Face” competition open for submissions, the excitement is justifiable. For me I am even more enthusiastic because this year I am working with the team and I know that there are some new and exciting things in store (don’t tell Gwen I said that).

If you have ever lived in, visited or seen New York City on television, you know that it is no joke. This city literally never sleeps and is always upbeat (unless there is a blizzard). This is something that those of us who have attended Full Figured Fashion Week® before are hip to but still not totally prepared for. However, for the attendees that are visiting for the first time, they can find themselves on an emotional rollercoaster; excited, nervous, confused and happy all at the same time.

While I can’t school you on what I have not mastered myself, I feel obligated to share what I can so that you will be somewhat prepared for your time in the “Concrete Jungle”.

  1. The struggle is real, just know that! Cab drivers in NYC seem to always have their own agenda. They will have a empty car and drive right pass you. You have to be aggressive and let them know that you need a ride or you will be passed by every time. You may want to download the Uber app because it could be your best friend. Face Of FFFWeek 2015 Revee Lamar
  2.  You might want to get your Flava Flav on and put a clock around your neck because time seems to fly. With plans to shop (I know you gonna shop), sightsee and attend FFFWeek's many events; you must be sure to keep track of time. The FFFWeek® team is serious about starting their events on time and I promise you every moment counts.

  3. Nearly every Tom, Dick and Harriet has a trick of their sleeves! When touring Times Square (it is a must) be mindful of scams, even the cartoon characters are trying to make a dollar or two and they live for naive tourist. Oh and trust me, they will know you're a tourist; they can spot us a mile away (I think we smell different or they have spidey senses).Blogger Maui Bigelow of PHAT Girl Fresh
  4. It is no walk in the park! While in the city, know that you will be given the task of mastering being comfortable and cute at the same time. There is a lot of walking involved, so while we all dream of being in NYC getting our Carrie Bradshaw on, it is not realistic.  You can dress the part but make sure you have comfortable shoes unless you are really about that life.

  5. Curves At Sea will be one of the most lit events of the entire week. I honestly don't think the the stories can do it any justice. You have to experience the hundreds of curvy girls and guys all decked out in their fly white attire; Dancing, socializing and just having a great time. While the week kicks off on Sunday, Wednesday's cruise is the official start when everyone really comes out in record numbers. This year is going to be epic with early bird tickets sold out (they were gone in a couple of hours), you better be sure to get your ticket ASAP! Blogger at FFFWeek Curves At Sea
  6. Be prepared to meet many of your favorites from the plus size community/industry. It is no secret why FFFWeek® is called the Oscar's of the plus size industry, it is the largest, longest running plus size event and it has gained the respect of many of our industry's elite. Many of the bloggers, models and celebrities that you follow will be in arms reach and ready for selfies so make sure your phone is charged and in hand. Blogger Maui Bigelow of PHAT Girl Fresh and gospel singer Kierra Sheard
  7. I know that this is going to come as a surprise to some but Gwen DeVoe is as nice and down to earth as they come. After the events when the lights come on and she laces up her Chucks, she is ready to talk and take photos with attendees; so don't be afraid to say hello to her and the rest of the team.Selfie with Gwen DeVoe, team members and FFFWeek attendees

Like I stated, I have mastered the day to day activity of the "Big Apple" so my advice is limited. However, I can tell you that it is a one of a kind experience that you must be a part of. For those of you who are trying to find your place in the plus size industry, FFFWeek® is a great way to get inspired and motivated to do great things.

For those of you that have attended in the past, what is your favorite event? Do you plan to attend this year? What has been your most memorable experience? Chime in ladies, I want to hear from you!
